Tartu City of Literature
First documented in 1030, the city of Tartu has been a crossroad of cultures and languages: the city has been under the reign of different foreign powers throughout its history creating layers of different cultures, languages and influences. Literature in the Estonian language is one of the newest of these layers starting in earnest in the 19th century. The Estonian language itself has different dialects and several poets also write and perform in Russian or Finnish. This newly commissioned film will share insights into the history of language and culture in Tartu alongside readings, with translation, of texts in different languages against a backdrop of culturally significant places.
Manchester City of Literature is committed to inclusion and accessibility for everyone.
