Join Nawal Nasrallah to talk about the culinary practices of medieval Islamic society, particularly in Baghdad.

Written more than a thousand years ago, Sayyār al-Warrāq’s cookbook Kitāb al-Ṭabīkh offers a rich insight into the culture of food that flourished in Abbasid Baghdad during its prosperous times.

The talk will introduce al-Warrāq’s cookbook, which anthologized the sophisticated Abbasid cuisine, with a comprehensive discussion of its origin and the dish varieties it offered, with an eye on their regenerative properties based on the Galenic theory of the four physical humours that dominated the thinking of the medieval world. All are accompanied by pictorial presentations that offer a window into the world being discussed.
