The Manchester Centre for Gothic Studies at Manchester Metropolitan University is delighted to open registration for the International Gothic Summer School, an exciting series of lectures, workshops, seminars, readings and screenings to be held at Manchester Metropolitan University from Tuesday 11–Friday 14 June 2024. Over four intensive days, participants will explore selected aspects of the Gothic imagination, from the eighteenth century through to the present day.

All events will be led by active researchers and professionals in the broad field of Gothic Studies, and supported by our visiting speakers, Professor Adam Lowenstein (University of Pittsburgh, USA) and Professor Roger Luckhurst (Birkbeck, University of London).

Although open to everyone with an interest in the Gothic, the event is particularly suited to advanced undergraduates, postgraduate and prospective postgraduate students and early-career researchers.

On the afternoon of the second day (Wednesday 12 June), participants will have the option of presenting short and informal papers (15 minutes) drawn from their own research. If you are interested in delivering a paper, please email a title and brief abstract to gothicsummerschool@mmu.ac.uk by Monday 3 June 2024.

Note: This Summer School is non-residential and non-credit-bearing, and does not require the submission of any course work or the sitting of an examination. Letters of participation will be issued upon completion. Please email us at gothicsummerschool@mmu.ac.uk if you have any queries.

We’re so looking forward to welcoming you to Manchester in June!

A limited number of travel bursaries are available for PhD students, independent scholars and unwaged participants. If you would like to be considered for one of the bursaries, please email the organising committee at gothicsummerschool@mmu.ac.uk
