‘Do you want to hear a story with a terrible ending?’

MLF is delighted to present Taffy Brodesser-Akner, author of the hilarious, feminist bestseller Fleishman Is in Trouble, to discuss her new novel, the even funnier, smarter and acerbic family saga Long Island Compromise. In 1983, businessman Carl Fletcher is kidnapped from his wealthy neighbourhood. Returned after a ransom is paid, the family decide to continue with their Jewish American Dream, safe in the knowledge that they’re all fine. 40 years later, eldest child Nathan lives in chronic fear, middle child Beemer is addicted to drugs, sex and food, and the youngest Jenny has made a career fighting for workers’ rights, primarily to annoy her family.

Taffy is a staff writer at The New York Times Magazine and author of two novels. Fleishman Is in Trouble was adapted by Taffy into an Emmy-nominated series starring Jessie Eisenberg and Claire Danes.

‘Not gonna sugarcoat this: Long Island Compromise is the best book I’ve read this year. You do not want to miss it.’ Harlan Coben
