Michael Schmidt was awarded the University of Manchester’s prestigious Medal of Honour on Tuesday 18 March.

Honorary degrees and Medals of Honour are the University’s highest awards, and nominations come from current University students, alumni, staff and members of the Board of Governors or General Assembly for these awards.

The award recognises Michael Schmidt’s significant contribution to publishing in Manchester, which includes founding the leading international poetry journal, PN Review (which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2023) and being Publisher and Editor of Carcanet, one of the great poetry presses which, from its Manchester base, has published the work of new and established poets.

“Michael Schmidt is a true citizen of the world, a good and faithful servant to poetry, whose enthusiasms and whose drive and infectious belief in the power of books have been a glory, for more than 50 years of the University, the city of Manchester, and the global literary community.” Professor John Mcauliffe, Director of Creative Manchester
